My Next: Todo
Getting Started
Set up My Next: Todo in 3 minutes
Welcome to My Next: Todo — a calm, personal planning app.
Step 1 — Open My Todos
This is your daily view. It shows what you have on for today. Swipe between days to move forward or back, or tap a day in the header to jump to a specific date. The Someday view shows all todos that don't have a scheduled day yet.
Tap the menu button and choose Add to create your first todo. Swipe left on a todo to skip it, swipe right to complete it.
Step 2 — Open My Plans
Plans are like folders for your todos. You already have My List — a default plan that's always there. Tap the menu button and choose Add to create more plans.
Step 3 — Set up your Weekly Routine
Open My Plans and tap Weekly Routine to add the todos that repeat every week. At the start of each week (based on your chosen start day in Settings), the app creates a new week plan and fills it with your routine.
That's it — you're ready to plan your week and focus on today.
Create your first plan
Creating a plan
Your plan appears as a card. You can have up to 3 plans on the free tier (including My List), or unlimited with Extra.
Tip: You can also copy an existing plan from its menu — this creates a new plan with the same todos.
Adding a todo
Your todo now shows up on the chosen day. If you didn't pick a day, it stays in the Unplanned column of your plan.
Quick Add
Want to add todos faster? Turn on Quick Add in Settings → Behavior. When enabled, the action button changes to a + icon — tap it to go straight to the add form. Long press the button to access the full menu.
Managing your plans
Plans are folders for your todos. You start with My List — always there, can't be deleted — and can add more from My Plans.
Two plan types: Regular and Weekly
When you create a plan, you choose the type:
How week plans work
At the end of a week, the app automatically handles any active todos still remaining in the expired week plan — so your view stays clean and nothing carries forward silently. By default, remaining todos are skipped, but you can change this in Settings → Planning → When a week ends. Options: Skip remaining (default), Complete remaining, or Move to Someday (clears the date and moves them to My List). The week plan itself stays visible for a while so you can review it, then disappears automatically.
You can control how long expired week plans are kept in Settings → Data → Week Plan Retention (default: 1 week after the plan ends, range: 0–4 weeks). Set it to 0 to remove them as soon as the week ends.
Creating a plan
Tap the action button in My Plans and choose Add (or tap + if Quick Add is on).
Free tier: My List plus 2 custom plans. Unlimited with Extra.
Editing a plan
Tap the plan name or header to open the edit form. You can change the name and description. The plan type cannot be changed after creation.
Deleting a plan
Open the edit form and tap Delete at the bottom. If the plan is empty it deletes immediately. If it has todos, you'll be asked what to do with them: delete them along with the plan, or move them to My List first.
Reordering plans
Tap the action button in My Plans and choose Reorder. Drag handles appear next to each plan — hold and drag to rearrange. Tap Done when finished.
How week plans are generated from your routine
The app can automatically create week plans and fill them with your Weekly Routine — so you start each week with a realistic picture already in place.
Auto-generating weeks
Go to Settings → Behavior → Auto-generate Weeks and choose how many weeks to keep ready:
Each time you open the app, it checks whether new weeks need to be created and generates them automatically.
What gets added to a new week plan
Auto-generated week plans are always populated with your Weekly Routine — each routine todo is added to the corresponding day of that week. If you haven't set up a routine yet, the generated plan starts empty.
When you create a week plan manually, you can choose whether to copy your Weekly Routine into it or start with an empty plan.
What happens when you change your routine
Editing your routine also updates already-generated week plans. The rule is: only open (active) todos are changed. Anything you've already completed or skipped is never touched.
Tip: You can safely refine your routine at any time. Changes update all open todos across your generated weeks — while leaving anything you've already completed or skipped exactly as it was.
Daily Use
Getting around in My Todos
My Todos is your daily view — it shows what's on for a specific day. Here's how to move around.
Swipe or tap to move between days
Swipe left to go forward in time, swipe right to go back. You can also tap the previous or next day in the day selector at the top to step one day at a time.
Tap the current day to open the calendar picker
Tapping the day that is currently selected in the day selector opens a full calendar picker. This lets you jump to any date — useful for jumping further ahead in time.
The Someday view
At the far left of the day selector, before today, you'll find Someday. This shows all todos that have no scheduled day yet — ideas you've captured but haven't placed in time. Todos in Someday won't appear in any day view until you give them a date.
To schedule a Someday todo, tap it to open it and set a day, or drag it from the Someday view onto a day column in Planning view.
Tip: Use Someday as your inbox. When something comes to mind, add it without worrying about when. Then during your weekly planning session, move items from Someday into your week.
Quick ways to add a todo
There are several fast ways to add a todo without navigating through menus.
Long press the app icon
On the home screen, long press the My Next: Todo icon to reveal quick actions. Tap Add Todo to jump straight to the add form — useful when something comes to mind before you've even opened the app.
The action button (FAB)
The floating action button in the bottom-right corner of My Todos and My Plans is your main entry point. By default, tapping it opens a menu with options like Add, Search, and Reorder. From that menu, choose Add to create a new todo.
Turn on Quick Add for even faster access
Go to Settings → Behavior and enable Quick Add. When active, the action button changes to a plain + icon — tap it once to go directly to the add form, skipping the menu entirely.
If you still need the full menu (to search, reorder, etc.), long press the + button to open it.
Tip: Quick Add is great if adding todos is your most frequent action. Long pressing the button gives you everything else when you need it.
Set notifications
Notifications help you stay on track without constantly checking the app.
Adding a notification to a todo
You'll get a notification at the chosen time. From the notification, you can Complete, Skip, or Snooze the todo.
Notification permissions
The app will ask for permission the first time you set a notification. If you declined, you can re-enable it in Settings → Notifications → Open System Settings.
Remind Before and Keep Reminding (Extra)
With an Extra subscription, you can use Remind Before to get a notification before the due time (15 min, 30 min, 1 hour, or 1 day before) and Keep Reminding to repeat the notification until you act on it.
Acting on notifications
You don't need to open the app to act on a reminder. Notifications support several quick actions right from the lock screen or notification banner.
Tap the notification
Opens the app and takes you directly to the todo, so you can view details, edit it, or act on it from inside the app.
Long press the notification
Reveals the action buttons — without opening the app:
Tip: Long pressing works on both the lock screen and in the notification banner when the phone is unlocked. On the lock screen you may need to swipe left on the notification first and tap Options, depending on your iOS notification settings.
The action button (FAB)
The floating action button — the round button in the bottom-right corner — is your main shortcut for actions in My Todos and My Plans.
Default behaviour
Tap it to open a context menu. The options change depending on where you are:
Quick Add — change how the button works
Go to Settings → Behavior and turn on Quick Add. When enabled, a single tap on the button immediately opens the add form — no menu step. In My Todos it adds a todo; in My Plans it adds a plan.
To still access the full menu (Search, Reorder, etc.), long press the button instead of tapping it.
Tip: Quick Add is worth turning on if you find yourself tapping Add most of the time. You lose one tap per action and gain the full menu via long press whenever you need it.
Completing, skipping, and editing todos
Most of what you do with a todo is a single swipe away.
Swipe right — Complete
A green background with a checkmark appears as you drag. Release past the threshold to mark the todo as done.
Swipe left — Skip
An amber background with a forward arrow appears. Release to skip the todo. Skipping means it won't carry forward — the day is done and that's fine.
Undoing an action — the grace period
Completing or skipping a todo in your daily view doesn't remove it from the list — it stays in place, so you can always swipe the other way to undo.
For todos in Someday or the Missed section, it works differently: these are removed from the view when you act on them. To give you a chance to undo, a ghost version briefly remains visible with a small progress indicator counting down. During this window — 3 seconds by default — you can swipe in either direction to restore the todo. Once the countdown finishes, it disappears for good.
You can adjust the grace period (0–10 seconds) in Settings → Behavior → Undo Grace Period.
Bulk actions for missed todos
When the Missed section is visible on Today, bulk action buttons appear at the top: Complete All, Skip All, and Delete All. Each asks for confirmation before applying to all missed todos at once — handy when you've been away and want to clear the backlog quickly.
Long press — Quick menu
Long pressing a todo shows a quick menu: Schedule (or Reschedule if a date is already set), Edit, and Delete. Tap Edit to open the full edit form where you can change the title, plan, date, time, notes, and notification settings.
Delete
Inside the edit form, scroll to the bottom and tap Delete. The todo is moved to the bin — it isn't gone immediately and can be recovered from Settings → Bin for up to 30 days. You can also swipe to delete a todo in My Plans — swipe left past the skip threshold to reveal the delete action.
For repeating todos, you'll be asked whether to delete just this one or stop the repeat entirely.
What happens to todos you didn't get to
Life happens — sometimes you don't get to everything. My Next: Todo is designed to handle that without guilt.
Todos stay on their scheduled day
When a todo isn't completed or skipped, it stays on the day it was planned for. It doesn't automatically move to today or tomorrow. There's no automatic carry-forward.
The Missed section — visible on Today only
When you're looking at Today, a quiet "Missed" section appears at the bottom of your list if you have any active todos from earlier days. They show their original date so you know when they were planned. The visual treatment is subtle — a muted red tint on the date and time badges — informational, not alarming. The section shows up to 10 missed todos.
What you can do with missed todos
Missed todos work just like any other todo — swipe right to complete, swipe left to skip. Long press to edit and reschedule to a new day if you want to move it forward. There's no pressure to act on them in any particular way.
Automatic cleanup of old missed todos
To keep things tidy, the app can automatically move very old overdue todos to the bin. You control this in Settings → Data → Overdue Todo Retention. By default it's off (set to 0 days), so nothing is auto-deleted unless you turn it on. When active, only past-due todos older than your chosen number of days are trashed — they're recoverable from the bin for up to 30 days.
Week plan todos are handled differently
Todos inside a Weekly plan are handled automatically when the week ends — by default they're skipped, but you can change this in Settings → Planning → When a week ends. Options: Skip remaining (default), Complete remaining, or Move to Someday (clears the date and moves them to My List). Either way, they won't show up in your Missed section. See the article on plan types for details.
Tip: Skipping is not failure. If something didn't happen, skipping it is a clean, honest way to close the day. The app won't judge you for it.
Searching your todos
Search finds todos across all your plans at once — useful when you know what you're looking for but not where it lives.
Opening search
Tap the action button (FAB) in My Todos or My Plans and choose Search. The keyboard appears automatically and search starts as soon as you've typed 2 characters.
What gets searched
Search matches against both the todo title and any notes you've added to the todo. Title matches appear first in the results. If the match was found in a note rather than the title, a short snippet of the matching line is shown below the todo.
Filtering results
Use the filter chips below the search bar to narrow results:
Reading a result
Each result shows the todo title (with your search term highlighted in bold), the plan it belongs to, its scheduled date, and its state. Tap a result to open the todo and edit it.
Tip: Search is a great way to find old completed todos — switch to the Done filter and search by keyword to dig up something you finished weeks ago.
List view and Planning view in My Plans
My Plans has two views: List view and Planning view. You can switch between them using the toggle button in the top-right corner of My Plans.
List view
Shows all your plans as stacked cards. Each card expands to reveal its todos. This is the default — clean, simple, and great for reviewing what's in each plan. Each plan card has Edit and Reorder buttons in the footer for quick access.
Long press any todo in the list to see quick actions: Schedule (or Reschedule if a date is already set), Edit, and Delete. You can also swipe left on any todo to delete it.
Planning view (Extra)
Spreads your week plans out as columns side by side, with todos as cards you can drag between them. If you've ever worked with Kanban boards or Scrum sprints, it'll feel immediately familiar. And if those words mean nothing to you — that's fine too. You don't need to be a Scrum master to use it. Think of it as a visual whiteboard for your week: each column is a day, and you drag todos around until the week feels right.
Planning view is available with an Extra subscription.
Dragging todos between columns
In Planning view, press and hold any todo card until it lifts, then drag it to a different day column to reschedule it. Drop it anywhere in the column — the todo updates its scheduled day automatically.
Tip: rotate to landscape
Turn your phone sideways in Planning view to see more columns at once. Landscape gives you a much better overview of your whole week and makes dragging between days easier.
Routine or Repeating Todo — which to use?
My Next: Todo gives you two tools for recurring tasks — the Weekly Routine and Repeating Todos. They solve different problems, and knowing which to reach for makes your setup cleaner.
Use the Weekly Routine for anything that happens the same day every week
Workouts, a team standup, a Sunday planning session, watering plants on Thursdays — anything with a fixed weekly rhythm belongs in your routine. This is your standard week: the template of what a typical week looks like for you.
Open My Plans and tap Weekly Routine to add these todos. Each week, a new week plan is automatically created and pre-filled with your routine, so you always start with a realistic picture of the week ahead.
Use Repeating Todos for anything on a longer or irregular cycle
Monthly bills, a quarterly review, an annual dentist appointment, a bi-weekly grocery run — things that repeat but not every week. A repeating todo automatically schedules its next occurrence when you complete or skip the current one.
The rule of thumb
If you'd expect to see it on a typical week — put it in your Routine.
If it shows up every few weeks, months, or years — make it a Repeating Todo.
Why this matters
Your routine gives you a clear overview of your standard week at a glance. When it's set up well, a new week feels ready to go rather than empty. Repeating todos handle the rest without cluttering your weekly view.
Tip: Start by filling your routine before creating any repeating todos. Once your routine reflects a real week, you'll find you need far fewer repeating todos than you'd expect.
Create recurring routines
The Weekly Routine lets you define todos that repeat every week, so you don't have to recreate them.
Setting up your routine
How it works
On the first day of each week (or when you open the app for the first time in a new week), the app creates a new Week Plan and populates it with your routine todos. You can then adjust, add, or remove todos for that specific week.
Auto-generate weeks
By default, the app generates the current week and the coming week. With an Extra subscription, you can auto-generate up to 4 weeks ahead.
Tip: Your routine is a template. Changing it updates already-generated week plans too — but only for open (active) todos. Anything you've already completed or skipped is never touched.
Set up repeating todos
Repeating todos automatically create the next instance when you complete or skip one — perfect for bills, appointments, or anything on a regular cycle.
Creating a repeating todo
On schedule vs. from completion
By default, the next date is calculated from the scheduled date — so a monthly todo due on the 15th always stays on the 15th. Turn on From completion to calculate from when you actually completed it — useful for things like haircuts where the gap matters more than the date.
Repeats vs. Weekly Routine
Repeats are for individual todos on any interval (monthly, yearly, etc.). The Weekly Routine is for todos that happen the same day every week. For weekly todos, the routine is usually the better fit.
Free tier: Up to 5 active repeating todos. Unlimited with Extra.
Link todos to lists and notes
My Next: Todo works alongside its sister apps — My Next: List and My Next: Note. You can link a todo or routine to a specific list or note, then follow the link with one tap.
Adding a link
Create or edit a todo and tap Link. Choose whether to link to a list or a note. You'll see a picker with your available items from the other app.
Linking a routine
You can also add a link to a routine todo. When the app generates week plans from your routine, every todo created from that routine inherits the link automatically — so your weekly grocery run always links to the same shopping list, without setting it up each time.
Following a link
When a todo has a link, a small badge appears on it. Tap the link badge to jump straight to the linked list or note in its app. If the other app isn't installed, the link is still saved — it will work once you install it.
Removing a link
Edit the todo and tap the linked item to remove it.
Requirements
Both apps must be installed on the same device. Links are stored in a shared container and work entirely offline — no internet or account needed.
Tip: Link your weekly grocery run to a shopping list in My Next: List, or link a meeting prep todo to your notes in My Next: Note.
Sync, Backup & Restore
Your data, the bin, and backups
When done todos go to the bin
Completed and skipped todos are automatically moved to the bin after a retention period. By default this is 7 days, but you can change it in Settings → Data → Completed Todo Retention.
How the bin works
The bin keeps deleted items for a set number of days before they're permanently removed. The default is 30 days. You can change this in Settings → Data → Bin Retention. While an item is in the bin, you can restore it from Settings → Bin.
Backup and restore
You can export all your data as a backup file from Settings → Data → Backup. Backup is free for everyone — no subscription required. The backup includes your plans, todos, weekly routine, and settings. To restore, go to Settings → Data → Restore and pick a backup file. Restoring replaces all current data — it's not a merge.
iCloud backups
Your iPhone automatically backs up app data via iCloud or Finder. If you restore your iPhone from an iCloud backup, your todos and plans come back too — no manual export needed.
Tip: Make a manual backup before restoring, so you can go back if needed.
Troubleshooting
Report an issue
If something isn't working as expected, here's how to report it.
1. Enable debug logging
Go to Settings → Data and turn on Debug Logging. This records extra details in the background that help us understand what went wrong.
2. Reproduce the problem
Use the app as you normally would until the issue occurs again.
3. Use the Contact Support form
Go to Settings → Contact Support, select the Bug category, and describe what happened. Turn on Include Diagnostics and Include Recent Logs to automatically attach device info and logs to your message.
Alternative: export logs manually
You can go to Settings → Data → Export Logs to create a zip file with your log files and device info. Email it to [email protected] with a short description of the issue.
You can turn off debug logging after sending your report.
Notifications not working
If you're not receiving reminders, try these steps:
1. Check notification permissions
Go to Settings → Notifications in the app. If it says notifications are disabled, tap Open System Settings and enable them.
2. Check system settings
Open the Settings app on your iPhone → Notifications → My Next: Todo. Make sure Allow Notifications is on, Lock Screen, Notification Center, and Banners are checked, and Sounds is on.
3. Check Focus mode
If you use Focus modes (Do Not Disturb, Sleep, etc.), notifications may be silenced. Add My Next: Todo to your Focus mode's allowed apps.
4. Restart the app
Close the app completely (swipe up from the app switcher) and reopen it.
5. Check the reminder time
Open the todo and verify the reminder is set to the correct date and time.
If none of these steps help, contact us at [email protected].
